Foreword

This latest ‘Glory’ book traces the history of David and his significant descendants in fulfilment of God’s promises to David on various occasions: “thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever” 2Sam.7.16. We recall the words of Solomon in his prayer at the dedication of the Temple: “Therefore now, Lord God of Israel, keep with Thy servant David my father that Thou promisedst him saying, ‘There shall not fail thee a man in My sight to sit on the throne of Israel; so that thy children take heed to their way, that they walk before Me, as thou hast walked before Me’” 1Kgs.8.25.

Not only will we reflect upon a wondrous history of grace but we will project our thoughts to the glorious Millennial reign of Christ and the culmination of the Davidic Covenant in the perfect, just, benign and eternal Kingdom of God’s Sovereign. In those who will be considered we see delightful traits of the One Who “shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father David: and He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of His kingdom there shall be no end” Lk.1.32,33.

David, the man of war, reminds us of the mighty Conqueror Who will subjugate all His foes until not one is left standing. In Solomon we see the golden zenith of the Nation’s greatness but in Christ, “a greater than Solomon” Matt.12.42, the erstwhile oppressed and downtrodden Nation will become the greatest superpower on earth.

Though in the Davidic line there was weakness and failure and at times the light was almost extinguished, God’s promises never fail and the irreversible decree of heaven is: “Yet have I set My king upon My holy hill of Zion” Ps.2.6. In the reckoning of God that is a fait accompli.

The whole subject should be of immense interest to those who love the Saviour as, like David, we aspire to praise His glorious name: “Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is Thine; Thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and Thou art exalted as head above all” 1Chr.29.11.

Once again we express our grateful thanks to the authors who, in spite of all their other commitments, have submitted their chapters on time and have contributed so valuably to this fifteenth book in the ‘Glory’ series. It is our prayer that God will be glorified, as should be our sole motive at all times and that all who read this volume will be encouraged to anticipate with joy that soon-coming moment when “the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He shall reign for ever and ever” Rev.11.15.

Thou art coming! Thou art coming!
Jesus, our belovèd Lord!
O the joy to see Thee reigning,
Worshipped, glorified, adored!
